Morgan Stanley Ranks Sanctuary AI #3 on Humanoid-Related Patent Filings
Sanctuary AI has been recognized by Morgan Stanley’s Research division as a leader in humanoid robotics intellectual property, ranking third in published patent filings in their latest report, “The Humanoid 100: Mapping the Humanoid Robot Value Chain.” The report was based on published patents and applications filed within the last 5 years, however, it only identified 51 of the approximately 140 published US patent filings made to date by Sanctuary AI (only 36% of the company’s actual published US filings). And if unpublished filings could be factored in as well… this is really only the tip of the iceberg.
For the last 5 years, Sanctuary AI has been amassing a robust and strategic patent portfolio to ensure the company remains uniquely positioned and protected in what they knew would inevitably become a fiercely competitive space. Their IP investment includes direct filings and strategic acquisitions and is already proving highly advantageous as that same report states that Physical AI and General Purpose Robots will address the $60Trn/yr labor market–one of the largest capital flows in the world.
As more companies enter the space and begin to scale, manufacturing capabilities will grow and, as seen across other industries, the hardware manufacturing costs will begin to decline. The same can be said for AI costs as innovation continues and more competitors enter with open source models. According to James Wells, CEO of Sanctuary AI, “one of the key moats in the Physical AI market will be intellectual property. When looking at the past to other significant moments in tech, such as the advent of smartphones, IP assets became immensely valuable. Our commanding IP position ensures that Sanctuary will remain highly differentiated and protected as we continue on path to creating Physical AI for general purpose robots.”
